With the chance of wintery precipitation still on the horizon for this season, here are some helpful things to keep in mind in the event of snow or ice.
Ever wonder who is responsible for shoveling the sidewalk in front of your home?
According to the Montgomery County Government website, “County residents are required by law to clear sidewalks in front of and alongside their properties within 24 hours of the end of a snowstorm.”
Frustrated by the snow at the end of your driveway after the plow comes by? Here are some tips from Montgomery County to lessen this frustration:
“Help avoid the frustration that occurs should a snowplow cover your driveway entrance with snow after you have shoveled. Try to wait to shovel the end of your driveway until the snowplow has made one pass. When shoveling, stand facing the street and shovel snow to the right into the yard instead of into the street. Please remember that snowplows plow to the right and shoveling your driveway snow to the right will help reduce the amount of snow the plow re-deposits across your driveway entrance.”
Be aware of where you park your car during a snow or ice event!
The best place to park your car is in your driveway (or garage) if you have one. Cars parked on the sides of the road can prevent snow plows from getting by to plow the street. If you must park on the street, size up the situation to be sure that a plow will be able to get by, and that you are not blocking part of a street or cul-de-sac from being plowed. Montgomery County suggests:
“If you do not have a driveway, then park as close to the curb as you can. Park your car on the EVEN NUMBERED side of the street, if possible. And, move your vehicle to the other side of the street after the plow has cleared it. Residents in cul-de-sacs should park in driveways or parallel to the curb. One misplaced vehicle in a cul-de-sac may prevent it from being plowed.”
